'Cow Parsley at Dusk'. Large Original Painting
Cow Parsley, also known as ‘Queen Anne's (or Ann's) lace’ is an alternative name for cow parsley. Years ago, it was given a dreadful folklore which foretold of illness to mothers if picked by children, apparently to scare children into avoidance of picking any berries or plants in case of poisoning.
Not a gorgeous cheery story as with many other flowers - BUT, Cow Parsley remains one of my favourite flowers, growing amongst the hedgerows, they say to me countryside, fresh air and the world turning in the way it is meant to, year on year.
Walking the dog with my friend (see pic below) I found an abundance, picked armfuls and bought them back into my studio to be studied, drawn and then painted.
This painting is all about layers. Those beautiful stalks which work from dark out to light. The flowers are painted using all sorts of tools, my fingers, sponges and then fine brushes.
It is 100 x 100cm on a deep box canvas of 4cm.
